Other than that it's all kids. (while our Superintendent, Dean of Students, LAL Coach, Math Coach, Media Specialist, Director of Technology et al appear, they just lip synched lines recorded by the kids.)

Looks like they had fun too. They planned out those scenes, too? The whole video is very cute and creative , but I think there should be more ideas about how technology would be used if you really won the prize.

@ cloaka - Yes the administrative team was supportive. Due to professional time limitations their cameos typically consisted of less thaqn 10 minutes shooting time, but the crew - student driven - music director, lighting, dolly, etc. was there to experience how a professional shoot might be managed... The final product came from around 1000 video takes and around 500 audio takes. Filmed exclusively during specials - since Academics come first we did not invade core subjects. as for the use of tech, we tried to show that last year - see our video "use ya tech" this year we tried for a cohesive product thaat was student centered which discussed the need for gear. Thanks for your question.

@ DoctorL nice work on your vid - loved it. To answer you , yes we shot in high def, our 2.5 minutes ended up being around 1 gig so the final 27 meg file we uploaded was around 2% of the original size. The original has better res and luminance but props to eimakeover, the compression used here is much better than most streaming sites. Stephanie in tech support rocks. She answered our questions in a timely and meaningful way. PS It helps if the audio is played with a subwoofer. The stereo separation and mixing are more evident with better systems...

This is so wonderful. It brought tears to my eyes both out of laughter but mostly it was pride for these children. How original, positive and appropriate for their age group. I can't wait to vote and give it the five stars it deserves. GO RED BANK!!!!

Red Bank thanks Interwrite Learning and Einstruction for their inclusion of our video in the finalist pool. To our competitors, your work is great and we feel privileged to be included. I apologize for the length of this post, but it reflects classroom discussion from yesterday.

Our production team of students spent some time reviewing all the entries for the purpose of developing the skills to effectively critique, a higher level thinking skill. One question came up repeatedly, “Did we demonstrate the use of technology?”

From where Ipp and I are standing – yes absolutely. Whereas we don’t have tremendous amounts of technology in the classroom to show, we used everything we had. To produce a great music video by definition requires creative and effective use of technology. Each step was a teachable moment. The good news is that because the project was student centered, they are now empowered to create on their own.

Here is one example, from the first day of sound track takes:
When we started to record the multiple student vocals in the classroom, we had trouble getting a good sound. Background noise and hiss were an issue. Keep in mind this was an open classroom process with children in the room as the tracks were recorded. The decision was made to include the students at every stage for educational and practical reasons. We started by using an impedance adapter jacked directly into our one computer in the room. After discussing signal to noise ratios, sample rates and learning about histograms, we decided to add a mixing board into the loop. A discussion of gain structure, preamps, and the “clean” signal from the VLZ mic preamp we used gave kids a specific understanding of how their voices were affected at each step in the chain to the digital wave data. The need to keep the track volume consistent as the many vocalists stepped up created an opportunity to explore the use of compression and EQ, and to discuss the need to mix effectively in post production.

When the audio portion of the process was done, six classes had been exposed through the course of five days of instruction to the art of multi-track digital recording, sweetening and mixing. For something cut on classroom computer, we think the children sound great.

If you accept the premise that video sounds and looks good, then by definition, the children demonstrated an effective every day use of technology. Good digital production doesn’t happen by accident.

The lyric, through humor, attempts to discuss the vision the students have in their need for technology. One of my favorite shots is of our student, “OA” with the can saying “Communication, frustration, living in digital desperation…” as she talks to Tony. Sometimes, as we try to stream data, it can feel like that. (I should point out that we think our tech staff at RBMS is the greatest in country in getting the most out of what we have. Jayne and Joe appear with the frowning laptop, but never frown in real life)

In closing, I’ll point out that our low socio-economic status means that many of our students don’t have computers at their homes. Our hardworking families will have trouble logging in to vote, because in Red Bank the digital divide is real. Many of our families won’t be able to vote for their children, because they don’t have computers or an email address. But many are finding their way to the internet for the first time, because of your contest, to watch the video. Maybe we have reached a tipping point. We are small school, with a big vision. We are grateful to have been included in the finalist pool. Best of luck to our competitors, you have our respect and our best wishes!

Amazing video. Our school is in the same boat as you. We had very little technology to work with but relied on our production skills, just as you did. Great shooting, lighting and editing. Wonderful inclusion of the school, not just your class. You prove that with talent and production skills like that, any new technology sent to your school will be put in good hands and put to good use.

Solid commrecial production messaging values with heartfelt participation from the students and faculty in this production telling me this is not patronizing effort. What a refreshing message process, this scholl is clearly the winner. I viewed all others in this class and this is head and shoulders above the rest, without question in all categories: Attention Captured, messaging on point throughout, talent - talent is real and believable...(no shy smiles here, real passion and enjoyment of a confident, team appraoch they all felt involved in and some ownership from) I do not have a kid in this school, only a good friend that was proud enough of the work always done in this school to tell me what they recently were involved in. i asked to see it, and have to vote after looking at the others - - without doubt, the best of potentially the best!
